Bude Junior CHamps #1

Bude Strikers Juniors staged the first leg of their 2008/9 Club Championships on Saturday, 4th July. The entry was generally lower than usual, so Plate events were mostly run on the box system.
In the 9 & Unders matches went according to seeding with Danny Evans beating Emily Fanson in the final 3-0. Both players covered the court well and had some long rallies, but Emily could not reply to the pace of some of Danny‘s shots. Danny won 3-0.
The Plate Winner was Megan Thornton with Runner-Up Cliona Reilly-Hawkins.
The 13 & Unders produced some very close matches. In the semi-final Tremaine Fry(10) played sensibly to take the first two games, but Nicola(13) kept her cool and gradually worked her way back into match to narrowly take the next three games and win 3-2.
Sam Fanson had an easy passage to the Final, but gave Nicola another gruelling match. Sam took the first game 11/3, but lost the next two 5/11, 5/11 as Nicola played good length repeatedly winning on Sam‘s backhand back corner. Sam adjusted his game and playing less errors, patiently took the next two games 11/9 and 11/6. This was very good squash.
Due to unexpected withdrawals, the 17 & Under competition had to be revamped and run as a round robin, which in effect gave the players more matches. The winner was Tony Pepperell, who played a good variety of shots and covered the court at speed. Ben Fairclough, the runner-up, worked hard round the court and played thoughtfully to take a game from Tony. Mark Page was third.
The Girls Handicap was designed to be a fun event, but was generally taken very seriously as the younger girls receive very high handicaps.
Nicola Hardwick reached the final as expected, but Veronica Munks took advantage of her handicap to beat Emily Fanson 3-1 and go into the Final. Veronica tried hard and made Nicola work for her 11/9, 12/10, 11/8 win.
The Championships continue next weekend for 11 & Unders, 15 & Unders and Boys Handicap.
